Jobseeker's Allowance

I signed off today. No reason - I haven't found work yet - I'm just utterly, utterly sick and tired of the whole shebang. I had to get out.

Now it feels like the day I dropped out of my physics degree. I will worry about having absolutely no income when I have to - I've enough savings and leftover grant cheque for the immediate future.

rndsig

rndsig needs a recent version of bash, probably greater than 2.0, to run properly. If you run it on, say 1.14 or so, it'll print out a load of command [[ not found errors.

It's arguable that I should have used [ (i.e. test) instead of [[ but [[ is a lot easier to work with. Upgrade!

Links

I just noticed Danny Chrastina has this site on the bottom of his links page so I thought I'd link to it :-) His Time wasting page is also worth a look.

I really ought to do a proper links page. But, you know.

Birthday parties galore - the aftermath

Yeah. Um. Phew. I'm dead tired. I shouldn't be, I never actually do anything, but there you go... I could blame getting no sleep on Friday but then I never seem to get enough sleep wherever.

I think what I wrote about this weekend last year is still valid... Both parties were great, very different but good in their own ways. I don't seem to feel like being bothered into going into details :-) I probably posted too much on the subject to aaw and I can never be bothered with repeating myself...

PS London is just scary enough to be exciting. Like a big rollercoaster.

Back up again - in more ways than one

Well I dunno what happened there but for a few days I lost my connection! Zetnet, who have taken over Cloud-Nine's business since The Hack! last month, say "we have been experiencing problems" - what problems, I wonder. Oh well, I'm here now.

It would seem that before this happened on 18/2/2002 I managed to delete my public_html directory and this site vanished. Whoops :-) I'd like to blame rsync or Debian's version of it but it's too cool, so it was entirely my fault.

Also, it seems I'm now to use Zetnet's news server instead of the old Cloud-Nine one (which wasn't theirs anyway but an alias to news.chatlink.com) Not only is it faster, it carries the rec.games.computer.doom.* groups! Hooray 8-)

P.S. It's been pointed out to me - thankyou Simon - that missing off the www from a URL is a Bad Thing(TM).

Birthday parties galore!

I've got two parties to go to this weekend! Firstly to travel down to Enfield for Bex's 22nd then back up home to Coventry for "Baby" Dave's 21st the day after. Both are being looked forward to.

I'll take this opportunity to wish Matthew (is this your site, sir?) happy birthday for next week, and me, Simon, Elliot, Sarah and a bunch of other people who I've forgotten right now, happy birthday for next month.

Quick survey

Should the img/sig.gif graphic at the bottom of the page be left-aligned with the browser window, the left edge of this table, or perhaps right-aligned? Tell me please!

rndsig

Here's a new version of rndsig for you: download

It's a bash script now and can write to FIFOs - and there's a man page.

Yeah, man pages. Man pages are actually quite easy to write - the markup, if anything, is easier than HTML. Well, maybe. Actually they're probably about the same.

Hello everybody :-)

Yeah, some lamer's set up another pointless web page, I know what you're thinking. But you don't have to be reading this do you?!

So much for self-justification. "Rob's review of 2001" on alt.alumni.warwick was a success but took ages to do all at once like that so I thought, yeah, do something that could be just updated occasionally instead.

Plus my site's been exactly the same for too long. It needed a revamp. In fact I did one in mid-2000 but it was too ambitious and never got finished. The look (colour scheme, graphics etc.) of this site right now is very similar to that one from back then but laid out a little differently.

Suggestion: go and read the About page. You could also go and look at the anARCHy Track list but only if you want to see what it looks like as a table; we haven't made any new tracks for ages.

For some reason we wanted to get this done for today. Rationale: Something good has to come out of Valentine's Day, doesn't it?!
