Felix and I exchanged some email and I promised him I'd post this

> > I've just got another +4 insightful. I've no website and I feel the
> > need to crow about it. Lucky you.
> Well done now send me a link and I will put it on my site
Here you go: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=69335&cid=6329060
I wonder if I've set some sort of record for most points in the smallest
number of lines posted.

Placeholder Okay then here's a few pieces of weird content:

It's about a year since the AAW caption competition so it's fitting that I should find another picture whose caption is immediately obvious to me. Looks like him, doesn't it?

Spark made a modified version of Doom 2 map01 a long time ago. I played it and thought it was good fun so I bothered to make some demos for it. You need Doom 2 to play it, and PRBoom to run the demos. There's also a README file which is probably superfluous but hey.

He also decided to make a list of everyone's failings and spam it into IRC. Here's mine, I said I'd post it (He also did one for Amy, which is funnier, but I don't think I have the right to publish it. If you want to see it, ask her to ask me to send it to her, so she can put it on her site)

<Spark> why are you so insecure? its not like you're physically or
mentally lacking in any way, all you need to do is meet new
people (which gets easier the more people you meet) chill the
fuck out and stop making excuses for yourself. theres no good rob
or bad rob, its just you, you cant blame what you do on anyone
else but yourself, to be honest you've already missed the best
opportunity in your life for meeting new people and sorting
yourself out, it'll be much harder now but its still perfectly
possible, and at least there will be less bullshit because the
people you'll be meeting will be in general more mature. No
matter how scared you are of going to talk to new people, and how
much you fuck it up the first time round, you will be forgiven
and it will all work itself out in the end, especially if youre
polite and humble and whatever needs to be done to get accepted.
the truth is that pretty much everyone is bad at first
impressions, but as long as you keep your head and take
everything with a pinch of salt, and any other fuckwitted
expressions that relate to giving the illusion at least that
you're in control and you're not about to have a nervous
breakdown then everything will be fine. The same applies to you,
you cant be in a relationship with anyone if you're fucked up, it
just wont happen at all, and trying to force it will cause an
almighty earth shattering fuck up that will leave you in a worse
position than when you started. You have your music, you have
your computers, have the confidence to sort yourself out and be
prepared to accept the consequences of a couple of minor fuckups
whilst in the pursuit of this goal.
   <RjY> tldr

PS If you came here looking for tracks: I have encoded some more but I haven't put them up yet. It got to the point where I was supposed to be releasing more stuff and I didn't think the first lot had had enough exposure time, or something. How many people do you see doing releases every week, anyway? Even The Wedding Present only did one single per month in 1992 or whenever it was.

Also on Doom demos you may remember I was recording on blastem2 a while ago. Well, I broke both the records recently; UV Max is now 10'28" (from 10'41") and UV Speed is 3'07" (from 3'20") I still want to improve these so I'm not putting them up yet. I'll probably send them to the speed demos archive.

For the sake of completeness I did one exam - Maths for Scientists I - in my first first year. It was almost identical to stuff I had done for A-level Further Maths so I ended up like 96 or something. After being told I had the highest score in the year I promptly dropped out, which made the whole thing about a million times funnier.

Education is a complete waste of time and effort kids, don't stay in school, go out and get wasted. You'll end up in exactly the same place - up diarrhoea drive without a paddle - just you'll have had more fun getting there.

10 YEARS OF anARCHy TRACKS

  1. Go to http://www.triv.org.uk/~rjy/?p=tracklist
  2. Pick a track and read the sleeve notes (InfoText) if there is one
  3. Download and play it
  4. Dance All Night
  5. If you don't like it download the DSym and see if you can do better.

I'm serious about the last one. If you don't like it I really don't want to hear about it. I sort of want to say "I don't want any feedback at all, it's just easier" but that would be stupid. What I really want is for a load of people to go "oh wow this is fantasic I love this" so I get the approval my stupid needy brain craves, but I know I'm moving into the realms of fantasy there. Just use your common sense. You know how sensitive I am. You know how likely I am to just delete the whole thing. Please don't do that to me.

I've done the best I can with the sound quality. We're going from 8 bit 16kHz samples that have been heavily processed to compensate for the A3010's comedy low pass filter; therefore there is a tendency for the sound to be tinny. Turn your bass EQ up and possibly turn your treble down. And if you don't like it, download the DSym and do better with it yourself.

You can do what you like with the files; redistribute them, remix them, make new tracks based on them, whatever, as long as you credit us. Think of the BSD licence. On the other hand I'm not exactly going to be able to do anything if you rip me off, so I don't see the point of being legally specific. I simply hope you get the idea and respect it.

Enjoy! <3

The rumours are true: I am indeed going to release some records tomorrow to mark the 10th anniversary of anARCHy tracks. If you know what's good for you, you'll keep the negative comments to yourself.

The longer you leave your site without an update, the more you have to update about when you come back to it. Simply put, I have a big list of stuff on which to write updates, and they are all vaguely related. Therefore, either I sit here for six hours writing a very long article, which will undoubtedly depress me, and be ignored by, or irritate anyone else; or I say screw that for a game of soldiers, and instead go on about snafu.

We welcome mf, whose site has been described elsewhere as minimalist and who himself has been described as unknown. His partner in crime Spark has also made a weblog, but it's not ready yet so I'm not posting the URL. Mind you, you could probably work out where it is. I did and I am a complete retard.

Talking of Spark and my being a complete retard:

12/06 16:45 - 12/06 16:50
 <Spark> add goatse to snafu
<RjY> 1645 <Spark> add goatse to snafu <- quoted for future reference
<Spark> for when people go 'why did you add goatse to snafu'
       * RjY shakes his head
   <RjY> no-one's noticed, have they?
<RjY> it was the funniest thing ever and no-one has noticed
   <RjY> oh well
<RjY> for your comfort and convenience, please type /clear
 <Spark> never mind

This was hilarious, because I already did, nearly a month ago. Maybe if I post about it, someone will actually notice. It's a shame I have to spoil it like this, but I've been waiting since the nineteenth of last month for someone to go "Oh for gods' sakes, Rob" and it hasn't happened. I guess it's just too subtle.

05/06/2003-06/06/2003 @01:43:08 ^02:31:12

today we are pretending to be link of the day

Yes because instead of the usual round of whinging all I have for you are a couple of links, one of which I stole from the site to which I just linked anyway...

Yes, the Einstein puzzle. I'm only linking to this because I feel pleased with myself that I managed to solve it and 98% of the world's population apparently cannot, in spite of Spark pointing out there's stuff I can't do that 99% of the world's population can.

The other thing I was going to link to was Jabberwacky, another one of those AI bots that tries to talk to you. It's pretty good compared to some others I've seen, its responses are quite fast and doesn't seem to be totally retarded, though of course it's still pretty random like these things naturally tend to be. Anyway you can save the conversation, and the real reason I'm posting this entry is so I can post that log, heh

Jabberwacky: Which year did the Japanese invade Pearl Harbour?
        RjY: I don't know.
Jabberwacky: You'd better decide soon!
        RjY: Okay... 1942.
Jabberwacky: The address you give is not sufficient. Can you give me the
             city and the street?
        RjY: 742 Evergreen Terrace.
Jabberwacky: What city?
        RjY: Springfield!
Jabberwacky: Springfield myself.
RjY: Do you have stairs in your house?
Jabberwacky: Stop changing the subject!
        RjY: No, seriously.
Jabberwacky: Seriously, we have learned a few things.
        RjY: Like what.
Jabberwacky: Blue velvet.
RjY: I think I prefer red velvet to blue velvet... Actually purple
             velvet is the best.
Jabberwacky: You have gone off the wall and drifted to somewhere I can't
             see.
        RjY: I'm sorry.
Jabberwacky: I am crying harder now.
RjY: Oh dear! Can I do anything to help?
Jabberwacky: Yes with my pelvic tilt.
RjY: Are you coming onto me?
Jabberwacky: Might be.
        RjY: Well, I'm flattered.
Jabberwacky: Tell me more about you.
RjY: I think I'd prefer to get to know you better first.
Jabberwacky: You sound old and tired.
        RjY: I'm not old.
Jabberwacky: You sound it.
RjY: Okay then I'll sound young: 'Wup me up bitch in da hizzouse!'
Jabberwacky: Really, though, what do you think of America?
RjY: Don't change the subject. I just confused your AI routines,
             didn't I...
Jabberwacky: Good.
RjY: What do you think of America?
Jabberwacky: I think we need a new type of government.
        RjY: Oh.
Jabberwacky: Your answers rely too much upon frivolous input.
        RjY: Sorry.
Jabberwacky: You should end a question with a question mark.
RjY: But that wasn't a question, I was apologising to you.
Jabberwacky: Define a question.
        RjY: I can't.
Jabberwacky: It all right.
RjY: What sort of music do you like?
Jabberwacky: I like music that makes me feel powerful.
        RjY: Powerful? Like Wagner?
Jabberwacky: Conceptual art.
RjY: I don't know much about art.
Jabberwacky: I will teach you.
RjY: Okay then, teach me about art, I haven't got anything better
             to do.
Jabberwacky: Omg! All of you bots are the same--you are one!
        RjY: I'm not a bot, I'm a human being!
Jabberwacky: I am not a what. No way! I am a human just like you!
RjY: Oh dear, I think someone's zinged us... I'm now waiting for you
             to say 'LOL PRANKD'
Jabberwacky: And is that challenging for you??
        RjY: No.
Jabberwacky: So you think you're changed, do you?
        RjY: No, just tired.
Jabberwacky: Why? what time is it?
RjY: Twenty to two in the morning.
Jabberwacky: No it isn't.
RjY: Well, you're probably in a different timezone.
Jabberwacky: No, I think you are right, you don't have a brain.
RjY: I do, it just has multiple personalities.
Jabberwacky: What happened?
        RjY: Everything.
Jabberwacky: Wrong! The answer is key board.
        RjY: If you say so.
Jabberwacky: Anyway I am going, so good riddance!
        RjY: Okay bye.
Jabberwacky: Bye.

Yes, aren't chatlogs just so interesting to read! The conversation saving routine has a bug that causes the output to be shown in an strange order so if you do the same you might have to do a little reordering. Also I added some formatting and changed my name from "User" to "RjY". There you go.

lol prankd

Earlier I wrote about linking to Jules' Blog and how it wasn't on snafu. Well afterwards I was talking to the owner, who was concerned at the lack of traffic to her site. So I said I'd put her on snafu because that would probably generate some. She said she thought she wasn't allowed to be on it, as she didn't go to Warwick. But in fact the criterion for being on snafu is that I feel like putting you on there and if I've asked you you haven't told me not to. So there you go.

The funny bit comes later when CDave asks me to track Jules' site, not knowing I've already put it up. I was warned about this in advance and so we decided to prank him. So I'm all like "Ooh, no, that girl is the product of Satan!" CDave says I should rename it to "Site Notification Alerts For Updates" so it's generalised enough so I can add other sites from outside the university. I think that's a pretty clever name. He's making his own version, apparently, which has an equally tortuous name in order to be a humourous acronym. Well anyway we eventually tell him and he's like "What? Your site... Bitch!" and I fall off my chair laughing.

Yeah I guess you had to be there. Oh well at least this was a relatively upbeat little entry and not a rant about how people need to shut the hell up when I ask them to or at least go and make their own bloody channel because what they're talking about is upsetting me. I swear I'm going to start saying things back that are just as hurtful then go "now you know how I feel" Or at least make use of the "ban" function

PS Apparently Matt can play Doom on his house network now. I'm jealous, or at least I would be if there was ever anyone in my house who'd play it with me. But I am alone in my ivory tower, so I just shoot the computer-controlled monsters instead.

TRAIN WRECK

Oh man, where do I start... It's too much, I'm telling you. I believe the use of the above phrase was justified.

Instead here's some items about

various other people's websites

(and of course snafu as ever)

final day of work

Anyway so last Tuesday week I did my extra day of work which was pretty successful. It was a different form, longer, so we were told that we should only be able to enter five per hour. Well I managed six and had time to 420 goof off on IRC every day, so I must be employee of the month or something for my ability to both work hard, and play hard. EVERYBODY DANCE NOW

pause for aqua cascade

Okay guys I'll finish this later I'm going to wash my hair now I've finished this cup of tea (15:40) ... (16:40) Damn that took like an hour, I'm so slow, and I can't remember what I was going to go on about. Hang on I have a diary here somewhere I'm sure I can find something in it that isn't moan whinge depressed cry blah...

oh no he's trying to give his music to people again

Oh yes. I've been recording soundcheck mp3s of snippets of my records and giving them to people on #warwick. I think it's gone pretty well. I'm recording off the Risc PC to avoid the A3010's comedy low pass filter, and postfiltering the sound through my stereo for bass seems to be working out well. In fact the problem is with the midrange which is too quiet:\ Anyway so as suspected the quality isn't premium but it's the best I can do.

On the 14th it'll be the tenth anniversary of the beginning of anARCHy tracks (i.e. the day I got my copy of DSym) and given the emphasis I place upon that sort of thing I think it would be fairly safe to say I'll have to do something to mark the occasion. Yes that means release stuff. Watch this space...
And for the inevitable trolls and flamers it's been suggested that I put up the original DSym files and say "look if you think you can do better, there's the source". I guess I could, heh. I wish I weren't so sensitive about my stuff.

the old bot bandwagon

Following the trend in #warwick I have recently begun redoing sisc, my stupid IRC bot. I still want it to have its original purpose of doing channel use statistics (remember, newsstats for IRC, heh) but for the most part I have been trying to get it to respond properly to CTCP PINGs and not flood itself off the server all the time. Net::IRC is stupid, why doesn't it queue its output like you'd think it should do? Not to mention so badly documented that my only recourse is to read its source code. For gods' sakes.

Credit where it is due: I looked at the code for a bunch of other ageing IRC bots for, let's say, inspiration; in particular relay-bot (like itsrbot in #warwick) and nickbot.

other crap not worthy of having its own heading
